Is Happiness a Choice? The Option Method Philosophy
What role does choice play in our happiness or unhappiness? Can we indeed choose to be happy? This was the most common question asked by the Option students who gathered together at Bruce Di Marsico’s home for this lecture recorded live in November 1995, just a few weeks before he passed away. These fortunate students, most of whom had studied at the Option Institute, had no idea that these would be Bruce’s last recorded words.
Bruce clarifies what he means by “choice.” He explains to his students how our beliefs affect our happiness and unhappiness. Bruce explores the connections between our feelings and our beliefs and just what kind of judgments cause us to feel bad.
Bruce describes how his Option Method works:
“[The Option Method takes unhappiness from] that vague cloud of confusion and that which just happens to you and brings it down to the real dynamics that cause your emotions . . . your beliefs and your judgments.”
Bruce explains in this lecture, “. . . Unhappiness happens in the dark, it happens in the half light of reason. The problem is that you think you know that you have to be unhappy. I suggest that it’s questionable. What if what you are feeling is just the result of a belief you have?”
Bruce discusses the purpose of the Option Method. “Why are people afraid to be happy? This is the third question in the Option Method. What are you afraid of if you weren’t unhappy about that? This [question] reveals the real reason [one has] for being unhappy.” In this lecture, his last before his death on December 4, 1995, Bruce shares with friends and students his kind understanding of human nature and happiness. Discover the root cause of your unhappiness through Bruce’s profound insights.
